In the early days of Internet connection people used a standard dial-up connection via their existing telephone based landline. Not only was this expensive but very slow also.

Broadband was the name given to a high speed Internet connection which provided a larger bandwidth. It is a quick connection, typically always-on and capable of transmitting data at a much faster rate than a traditional dial up connection.

Whereas dial-up connects at 52k, broadband typically connects at anything from 512k to 8meg (about 8000kb), this enables the user to have a far superior experience when surfing the web or using additional services such as VOIP.

In recent years as the technology has further advanced, it has become possible to transmit broadband wirelessly over huge distances and with no loss of service.

In the future development is already well underway that will allow companies and customers that choose wireless to be able to roam freely without any cables or landlines throughout most of the World while enjoying a connection far superior to that of a connection that relies on that of a fixed line connection.
