We know that summer is about more than just TV, but there are some real corkers on the way that you won’t want to miss! Here’s our pick of the new and returning shows that we’re most excited about seeing in the coming months.
Marking 20 years since her tragic death, this 90-minute documentary draws together the memories of the people involved to retell the story that fateful time. The difference between this one and the hundreds of other documentaries made about Diana is that this will feature interviews with the Princes William and Harry.
Yes, really..! The Crystal Maze is back for a full series, with comedian Richard Ayoade taking over the role that Richard O’Brian made so iconic in the 90’s.
The 20-part series kicks off with a celebrity special on June 23rd. They’ve updated the tasks and set since the original series… let’s hope they’ve still got some of that magic that we’ve been missing since it went off air.
June 23rd, 9pm, Channel 4
Top of the Lake
This gripping crime drama aired its first series 4 years ago, and the long-awaited second season looks like it will live up to expectations. The cast now includes Game of Thrones and Star Wars actress Gwendoline Christie, as well as an almost-unrecognisable, grey-haired Nicole Kidman. It’s a hard-hitter, and not one for the faint-hearted.
Late July, BBC2
The Big Family Cooking Showdown
Perhaps hoping to fill the void the nation’s favourite baking show left behind, the BBC has enlisted Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain and presenter Zoe Ball to travel the country meeting families who love to cook. They’ve even get Giorgio Locatelli and Rosemary Shrager to be the new Paul and Mary.
Fans of crime dramas will remember Jodie Whittaker as the scene-stealing grieving mother in Broadchurch. She takes on a very different role here as a nurse who loses her job and impersonates a doctor. This isn’t a fun life-swap story – there will be casualties and suspense in what’s being described as ‘psychological thriller’.
