Mounting levels of plastic waste and stray dogs are two unrelated, but serious, problems that affect many countries and major cities. A few years ago, a company called Pugedon came up with an innovative solution that addresses aspects of both of these problems – “Smart Recycling Boxes”.
When a user puts their recyclable plastic bottles and packaging into the top, the machine dispenses food and water out of the bottom for the strays. The theory is that the reclaimed plastic will cover the cost of the food, solving two problems at once. The machines are solar powered, making them even greener.
In the Turkish city of Istanbul, where the machines were first tested, there are an estimated 150,000 stray dogs and cats. Local residents are apparently quite attached to the stray population, and while it would be impossible to home them all, Smart Recycling Boxes can at least make sure that they get fed.
